Authentication Is a Science

Authentication at Gemaee means confirming that a bag, watch, or piece of jewelry is genuine before it ever reaches a buyer. Every handbag and accessory is checked with Entrupy's AI-powered scanning, and every watch goes through hands-on inspection by our team. Nothing is listed until it clears this process.

What does authentication verify?

Authentication is not a glance at a logo or a check of a serial number. It is a physical inspection of the details that are hardest to fake, the ones a counterfeiter usually gets wrong even when the obvious markers look right.

  • Materials: leather grain, canvas weave, and the composition of metal hardware
  • Hardware: weight, engravings, plating, and how clasps, zippers, and closures move
  • Stitching: thread type, stitch spacing, and pattern consistency along every seam
  • Condition: whether wear patterns match the item's claimed age and use

A counterfeiter can copy a logo in an afternoon. Getting every one of these details right at once is much harder, which is why a trained inspection catches what a quick look never would.

These details also have to agree with each other, not just look right on their own. Genuine hardware plating wears in a specific pattern over years of use. Genuine stitching holds a specific thread gauge and spacing across every seam, not only the ones a buyer is likely to check. A counterfeit can get the logo right and the stitching close, but rarely gets every signal to match at once, and that gap is what inspection is built to find.

Reference standards also have to track changes brands make over time. A hardware supplier, a stitching machine, or a leather tannery can change between production years, so the genuine standard for a model made a decade ago is not identical to the standard for the same model made last year. Authentication depends on knowing which reference year applies to the specific piece in front of us, not applying one fixed standard to every bag with the same name on the strap.

How does Gemaee authenticate handbags and accessories?

Every handbag and accessory that comes through Gemaee is checked with Entrupy, an AI-powered authentication platform trained on data from genuine and counterfeit items across major luxury brands. A specialist captures close-up images of the material, stitching, and hardware, and Entrupy's system compares them against its reference data to confirm the item is authentic.

The scan itself goes well beyond a standard photograph. A specialist uses a microscope attachment to capture close-up images at specific points on the bag: the leather grain on a panel, the thread along a seam, the stamping on a zipper pull or hardware plate, and the texture inside a pocket. Each image is taken at a level of magnification a buyer would never see in a listing photo.

Entrupy's system compares those images against its reference library of genuine and counterfeit examples for that brand, model, and material combination, then returns a result based on how closely the bag's physical details match known genuine production. A result that falls short of that bar means the bag does not get listed, regardless of how convincing it looks in normal light.

A scan result is a strong signal, not the whole judgment. Specialists are trained to recognize what ordinary wear looks like on genuine materials, so a bag with heavy use is not mistaken for a fake with the wrong texture, and a lightly used counterfeit is not waved through because it looks clean. The scan and the specialist's eye are checking for different kinds of errors, and both have to agree before an item moves forward.

This step happens before an item is ever photographed for sale. A bag that does not pass is not listed on Gemaee, whether it is a Chanel flap, a Hermès Birkin, or any other piece in our second-hand luxury bags collection.

How does Gemaee authenticate watches?

Watches do not go through Entrupy. Instead, every timepiece is inspected hands-on by our team before it is listed for sale.

The reason comes down to what a scan can and cannot see. Entrupy's imaging is built to compare surface details on leather and hardware against a large reference library, which works well for handbags. A watch's authenticity often depends on what is inside the case, in the movement and its finishing, which a surface scan cannot reach. That is why watches go through a specialist's hands rather than a camera.

Our specialists examine the movement, case, dial, and any accompanying papers against what a genuine reference should look like for that brand and model. They check for mismatched parts, incorrect engravings, and signs of a case or dial that has been altered or replaced with non-original components. A watch that raises concerns our team cannot resolve does not get listed, regardless of how it presents on the surface.

  • Movement: caliber engravings, jewel count, rotor signature, and the quality of finishing on parts the case was never meant to show
  • Case and caseback: reference and serial numbers, engraving depth and font, and whether the metal weight matches what that model should weigh
  • Dial: print alignment, font, lume application, and date wheel positioning against a genuine reference for that exact model year
  • Bracelet and clasp: end-link stamps, clasp engravings, and stretch consistent with the watch's claimed age
  • Box and papers: serial numbers that match the watch, and card stock or printing consistent with the production era

Any one of these points can look correct on a convincing fake. A well-made counterfeit case might carry correct-looking engravings while the movement inside gives it away, or a genuine case might be paired with a dial that was swapped years earlier. Our inspection checks all of them together rather than stopping at the first detail that looks right.

This hands-on approach matters because watches hide their history in places a photograph cannot show: inside the case back, in the movement, and in the fine detail of a dial print. Buyers browsing our pre-owned Rolex collection or our wider pre-owned watches in Dubai selection are looking at pieces that have already been through this inspection, not items waiting to be checked after a sale.

What happens if an item does not pass?

Not everything that arrives at Gemaee makes it to a listing. If a bag or watch fails authentication, or if damage and repairs raise concerns we cannot resolve, the item goes back to the seller instead of going up for sale.

This means a buyer browsing Gemaee is never looking at unverified stock. Every listing you see has already cleared the same bar, whether it is a handbag checked with Entrupy or a watch checked by hand.

Turning an item away also protects everyone else using the platform. A single counterfeit that slips through would undermine trust in every other listing on the site, which is why the standard does not bend for a piece that is otherwise in excellent condition or comes with a compelling story.

We communicate the reason directly to the seller rather than leaving them guessing. Knowing whether an item failed on materials, hardware, or a mismatched part also helps a seller understand what buyers and appraisers elsewhere would eventually notice too.

How does Gemaee grade condition?

Authentication confirms an item is genuine. Condition grading tells you what shape it is in, and we treat both as separate questions that deserve separate answers.

Our team documents scuffs, corner wear, hardware tarnish, interior staining, and any past repairs during inspection. That detail is reflected in the listing itself rather than smoothed over into a single generic label. A seller and a buyer looking at the same page should see the same honest picture of the item's condition, not a marketing description of it.

For handbags, that means checking the corners and base for rubbing, the handles and straps for darkening or stretch, the hardware for plating loss or tarnish, and the interior lining for staining or odor. Zippers and clasps are tested for smooth function, not only checked by sight. Any past repair, whether a restitched handle, a replaced zipper pull, or a cleaned interior, gets noted rather than left for a buyer to discover after purchase.

For watches, condition covers the case and bracelet for scratches or polish history, the crystal for chips or hairline cracks, the dial and hands for fading or corrosion, and the movement for accuracy and service history where that information is available. A watch that runs well but has clearly been over-polished, softening its original edges and engravings, is noted as such rather than presented as sharp factory condition.

This detail matters most on high-value pieces, where a difference in condition can mean a meaningful difference in price. Buyers are pricing the item they will receive. Sellers are evaluated on the same standard every other item on the site is held to.

Sellers see this same documentation before a piece goes live, not after a buyer raises a question. Gemaee lists items on consignment rather than buying stock outright, so a seller and Gemaee are looking at the identical condition record from the start, and that record is what the final listing is built on.

Why does authentication matter when you buy or sell in Dubai?

Gemaee works with sellers and buyers across the UAE, from Dubai to Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al Khaimah, though physical handover and authentication take place at our Dubai location. That single point of inspection is what lets us apply the same process to every item, no matter where in the UAE it came from.

For sellers, this process is also part of what protects value. Well-kept pieces from houses like Hermès and Chanel are especially likely to hold their value over time, and a documented, authenticated condition record supports that when the piece is resold. For buyers, it means a five-figure bag or watch has already been checked by someone whose job is to catch what a quick look would miss.

What can you expect before you buy?

Every item on gemaee.com has already been through this process by the time you see it listed. Bags and accessories have cleared Entrupy authentication. Watches have cleared hands-on expert inspection. Condition has been documented rather than glossed over.

That is what authentication as a science means at Gemaee: not a checkbox at the end of a listing, but the reason the listing exists at all.
